We hear the bells...

It must be that wonderful time of the year again!  The Christmas Season has begun, the lights have been going up, people are humming Christmas Carols, Santa is popping up all over the place, you just never know where you will run into the that Jolly Ol' Fellow!  Christmas in Florida brings us wonderful weather, yes, even beach weather, so get out and take advantage of the cooler temps, the light breezes and the bright sunshine, it will brighten your day!  Christmas is a time of "giving", so if you have the means and/or the opportunity to make someone else a little happier this this year, please do.  There are so many in need, whether it is for food, shelter, gifts for children, or even just friendship.  Tis' the season to to jolly, so let's help make it jolly for everyone with "random acts of kindness".  The next time you are in the position to help, whether it is a friend, a co-worker or a perfect stranger, be there for them.  Remember that just your "smile" can brighten the day of others!

The Decorations...

We hope you enjoy the lights that we have put up at the entrance of the park. It is fun to decorate and to be able to enjoy the the lights at the park after watching the beautiful Aripeka Sunset.  We love to see your homes beautifully decorated for the season, so go ahead, put them up, let's make Aripeka West shine brightly this Christmas Season.

Pearl Harbor Day...

President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Congress of the United States:
Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.
The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with the government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.
Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleagues delivered to the Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack.
It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. Very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.
Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.
Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island.
This morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island.
Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.
As commander in chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.
Always will we remember the character of the onslaught against us.
No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.
I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.
Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.
With confidence in our armed forces - with the unbounding determination of our people - we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us God.
I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, Dec. 7, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.

Soups On for Christmas...

Aripeka West's Annual Christmas Soup Party is set to kick off the week before Christmas!!  On Wednesday December 17th at 6 PM, come one, come all to the RV Park to enjoy some tasty soups, breads, salads and deserts.  Please bring a pot of soup to put on our grill above a bed of embers to keep it warm.

In the past we have had many varieties of soups, so anything from Asparagus to Zucchini and everything in between will be fine.  Remember to place your soup in a pan that can sit on the grill about 2 feet above the embers, there will be no flaming fire so most metal pans will work fine!  If you do not have a suitable pan, try the "thrift " stores in the area, they have lots of pans that will work for very little money!

We are also planning our "White Elephant Gift Exchange".  We will draw to see who picks first and so on and then the fun begins!  These are our Rules for the exchange.

Aripeka West’s White Elephant Gift Exchange 2014

THE GIFTS:

1. There is no theme for gifts, any gift you pick out will be fine
2. The gift should be valued as close to $10.00 as is reasonable.
3. The gift should be something someone would actually want or use. It should be in new         condition.
4. The gift should be wrapped or in an envelope before arriving to the party. Gift bags are OK but must be completely sealed.
5. No Gift Certificates allowed.
6. Please place your gift under our Christmas tree when you arrive at the party.

THE GAME:
1. Each guest who wishes to participate must contribute a gift. Everyone gathers around the Christmas tree.
2. Choose a number on a paper slip from our bowl of numbers.  On the first turn, the guest with paper slip #1 chooses a gift, opens it, and all admire it.
4. On the second turn, the guest with paper slip #2 gets the choice of "stealing" any unwrapped gift (#1's) or choosing a wrapped one. If #2 steals #1's gift, then #1 must open a wrapped gift.
5. On the third turn, the guest with paper slip #3 gets the choice of "stealing" any unwrapped gift (#1's or #2's) or choosing a wrapped one.

The game continues based on the following:
1. If a gift is stolen from you, you can steal a gift (within limits, described below), or open a wrapped one.
2. The turn proceeds until a wrapped gift is chosen.
3. A gift cannot be immediately stolen back from the guest who just stole it.
4. The fourth "owner" of a gift gets to keep it. The gift is "dead" after it has been stolen three times.
5. "Owners" of "live" gifts must keep them visible and hold them up when requested.
6. The gift exchange ends when the last wrapped gift is opened. Usually, guests are encouraged to perpetuate the gift stealing as long as there are "live" gifts, but no one is obligated to do this.

Please Take lots and lots of pictures for post on Facebook for all to see!

This year's "Contest" will be decorating your Christmas Hat!  Whatever type of "hat" you choose, just throw on the decorations!  Your hat might be a Santa hat, then again it might be Reindeer Antlers or a Wreath or a Christmas Tree, oh just let you imagination run wild, pick your headgear and decorate!  Everyone has a vote, and we will announce the winner right before the White Elephant Gift Exchange.  Please vote for your favorite "hat" and drop it in the box provided.

Please use our "Photo Booth" and take a few shots, there may even be some "props" available!

Wishing everyone at Aripeka West
a very Merry Christmas and
a Happy New Year!!

November 2014 Newsletter

Fall has found us...

Finally a break in the weather, cool nights and warm days, now this is what Fall in Florida is all about.  The humidity is lower along with the temps making it very comfortable here at Aripeka West.  The rain seem to have left us too.  This si the perfect time of year to just go out and enjoy the great outdoors.  Go hiking in the Preserve, play golf at the great nearby courses, ride your motorcyles and bicycles, enjoy a fishing trip out on the Gulf or just drop a line at "the bridge", dine "al fresco" at one of our wonderful little outdoor cafes and grills, walk your dog, go jogging,  but whatever you do, enjoy the fresh air and sunshine of this beautiful season.  It is not too late to take your boat, canoe or kayak out on the Gulf or up and down the Weeki Wachee River and don't forget to watch our beautiful Aripeka Sunsets, happening daily, no two are ever the same, the viewing is great from "the bridge".

Fall Back...

Along with the arrival of cooler  and drier weather comes the end of Daylight Saving Time for this year. Remember to "fall back" at 2 AM on Sunday Morning November 2nd.  Remember to set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night so you will not be late for your planned activities on Sunday Morning.  The sunsets will be earlier after Saturday November 1st, but they will be just as beautiful to see!

Just a reminder...

This is the time of year when sitting by a fire is a fun way to pass an evening, but please keep it safe. Remember there are no ground fires allowed at Aripeka West.  All fires must be contained in either a grill or an outdoor fireplace.  Please be considerate of your neighbor, no one wants a RV or Mobile Home full of smoke.  Fires in the FirePit located in the RV Park must be attended at all times, if you start a fire in the FirePit, please plan to be the one who will also extinguish the fire at the end of the evening.

Miss Daisey Boat Tours...

Come join us aboard the Miss Daisy pontoon boat for a two hour scenic tour along the Pithlaschascotee River (Cotee) in beautiful Port Richey!

Your tour will then go out to the Gulf of Mexico where you will see famous mansions including the home of Johnny and June Carter Cash, the unique stilt homes along the coast, and even spy on dolphins frolicking along with the other native sea life! Captain Ray Kelly shares the legend and lore of the area including the fact that New Port Richey was poised to be the “Hollywood of the East” with silent film stars creating a mecca back in the 1920s.

Miss Daisy is docked at the Gill Dawg Marina in Port Richey, Florida (behind the Seaside Inn). Enjoy a meal before or after your tour at the restaurant or at any number of restaurants in downtown New Port Richey. You may also bring your own snacks, refreshments and libations in your own coolers on board.  There is a private toilet on-board.

Might be fun, anyone interested?

Coffee with Friends...
Don't forget to join us every Wednesday Morning (weather permitting) for a little something to eat and a cup of coffee at 9AM in the RV Park.  Come and meet your friends and neighbors.  Each Wednesday we will have something to eat, maybe pancakes and sausage, maybe some bacon and eggs, maybe "Campground Omlets", maybe donuts, maybe sausage gravy over biscuits, you just never know what we might be serving. Say "Thanks" to a Veteran!

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

Black Friday Deals...

Is it really a deal, is it really worth staying up late, getting up early or giving up the Thanksgiving meal?  It is up to your to decide.  BlackFriday.com just might help you make the decision to jump in crowds or sit them out.  BlackFriday.com will begin gathering all the Black Friday ads for all the stores very soon, both in store and online, both brick and mortar and virtual stores are included, they will have the ads posted on their website as soon as they become available.

Black Friday Shopping Tips
We all know Black Friday offers the best holiday season shopping deals, but they only come to those who are prepared and in the right place at the right time. Here are some tips to help you make the most of the sales and discounts so you get the most bang for your buck.

Do Your Research
If you are planning on making a special purchase of a big-ticket item based on a Black Friday sale, it is important to remember to check consumer reports and read consumer reviews of the item before you decide to make the purchase. If the product is bad, just because you got it for cheap doesn’t make it a good deal. Take the time to make sure it’s a quality product and worth getting up early or staying up late for the price cut.

Browse the Deals Before You Go
Thanks to BlackFriday.com, you can get a good idea of what deals will be where well before Black Friday shopping starts. Knowing which retailers are going to have what on sale and when before the big day will help you decide where and when you want to go, will help with budgeting, and will help you see who you have left to shop for. As you browse the deals, make a list with the product, who it’s for, the price, the location, and any special hours for the sale.

Compare Prices Before You Head Out
Shop around to see what the average retail price of an item is before you leave, so you can go to the store that is offering the best deal. Check to see what usually comes with the item you are looking for, and what the store is offering. Many stores offer”stripped down” versions of products, which means you will have to spend money on accessories. Take time to see what accessories you will need to determine if the deal is really worth it or not.

 Bring Ads with You
Bring sales ads with you so you can have them available if you need to call a store out on their “lowest price guarantee.” Most stores have a policy that will allow them to match or beat a lower advertised price, but will require you to show the ad as proof to process the price difference. Generally speaking, the store policy will not apply to online advertised deals, even in the case of the store website due to online only deals, but you can always print the web page where you saw the deal with the advertised price and give it a shot.

 Use Store Credit Cards
I’m not saying go out and max your cards. You will still have to practice budget savvy shopping and make regular payments to avoid hefty interest charges, but many stores offer extra discounts and warranties if you make purchases on your store card. This, when paid in full as if it were cash, can offer extra savings benefits.

Early Bird and Night Owl Specials
Many stores advertise early bird deals, generally between 4 and 11 a.m., to help draw in the crowd, but also offer night owl specials between the hours of midnight and 4 a.m. to draw in the crowd that doesn’t like to get up early, but would rather stay up late. Cashing in on these deals is not only a good way to beat the crowd, but it’s a good way to guarantee the getting will be good, because typically, once the deals are gone, they are gone.

Familiarize Yourself with Store Policy
Stores are becoming stricter on return and exchange policies, knowing the store policies before you go can help you decide where to shop and what places to avoid. Most stores are now starting to charge a restocking fee and closing the return window, so customers do not have as long to return a product. The amount of time you have to return something is important since you’re buying nearly a month in advance. Having a receipt is also very important, because no receipt often means no return.

 Don’t Forget the Gift Receipt
Many stores are printing a gift receipt so you can include a receipt with the gift in the event of return or exchange, without divulging how much money you spent on the item. While many stores do this automatically for holiday season purchases, it is important to ask for one so you can be sure to have it for the recipient.

Remember starting with Black Friday this year, there are 27 Shopping Days till Christmas, there is no RUSH!  And if you are a procrastinator and you are really are a Christmas Day Shoppers, there will be a store open, even if it is only a convenience store!  Enjoy your Christmas Shopping Season!

October 2014 Newsletter

Welcome Home...

Summer is over and it is time to say "Welcome Home" to our Winter Residents.  October in Florida offers cooler temps with sunny days and clear nights.  The "rainy season" is mostly over  and the great outdoors is there for you to enjoy.  Fall is a great time for boating, swimming, biking, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, golfing and just enjoying being outside.  You can turn your A/C off most nights and enjoy the fresh air while you sleep.  Looking forward to enjoying the great Fall weather here at Aripeka West.

Columbus Day...

IN 1492

In fourteen hundred ninety-two
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

He had three ships and left from Spain;
He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain.

He sailed by night; he sailed by day;
He used the stars to find his way.

A compass also helped him know
How to find the way to go.

Ninety sailors were on board;
Some men worked while others snored.

Then the workers went to sleep;
And others watched the ocean deep.

Day after day they looked for land;
They dreamed of trees and rocks and sand.

October 12 their dream came true,
You never saw a happier crew!

"Indians! Indians!" Columbus cried;
His heart was filled with joyful pride.

But "India" the land was not;
It was the Bahamas, and it was hot.

The Arakawa natives were very nice;
They gave the sailors food and spice.

Columbus sailed on to find some gold
To bring back home, as he'd been told.

He made the trip again and again,
Trading gold to bring to Spain.

The first American? No, not quite.
But Columbus was brave, and he was bright.

Dead Duck?...

A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As
she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his
stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest.
After a moment or two, the vet
shook his head and sadly said, "I'm sorry, your duck, Cuddles,
has passed away."
The distressed woman wailed,
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead," replied
the vet..
"How can you be so sure?" she
protested. "I mean you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or
something."
The vet rolled his eyes, turned
around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later
with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck's owner looked on
in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his
front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from
top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and
shook his head.
The vet patted the dog on the
head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he
returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also
delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat
back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and
strolled out of the room.
The vet looked at the
woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most
definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck."
The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and
produced a bill, which he handed to the woman..
The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$150!" she
cried, "$150 just to tell me my duck is dead!"

The vet shrugged, "I'm sorry. If you had just taken my word for it,
the bill would have been $20, but with the Lab Report and the
Cat Scan, it's now $150."

A little commonsense from an Ol' Cowboy...
Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.
Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.
Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.
A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.
Words that soak into your ears are whispered… not yelled.
Meanness don’t jes’ happen overnight.
Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads.
Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.
It don’t take a very big person to carry a grudge.
You cannot unsay a cruel word.
Every path has a few puddles.
When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.
The best sermons are lived, not preached.
Most of the stuff people worry about ain’t never gonna happen anyway.
Don’t judge folks by their relatives.
Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
Live a good, honorable life...  Then when you get older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time.
Don ‘t interfere with somethin’ that ain’t bothering you none.
Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a Rain dance.
If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin’.
Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.
The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin’.
Always drink upstream from the herd.
Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.
Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin’ it back in.

If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around.

Fish Fry...

This month our "group outing" will be Friday October 17th to the Fish Fry at Spring Hill Eagles Club located on Bolton Road in Hudson.  They serve a wonderful Fish Dinner for $7 which includes your choice of Grilled, Blackened or Fried Fish, a baked potato or fries, coleslaw and a hush puppy, plus all the condiments!  For those who do not care for fish, they have chicken, scallops, shrimp and usually a steak dinner.  Everything on the menu is pretty reasonably priced. Fun Fall Event...

2014 Fall Corn Maze – over 5 acres of corn field fun!
Our Fall Maze is a life-sized living labyrinth. Over 5 acres of challenging fun for all ages.  You enter at a starting point and navigate your way through the maze. Check points are set out along your journey to assist in a successful completion. Check points are areas in the maze containing questions or clues that will point you in the right direction. Don’t worry if you make a wrong turn, it’s all part of the fun. The length of time it will take to complete really depends on the individual (We won’t rush you, but we will make sure you are out by closing time). We also have staff roaming the maze assisting if needed. Our maze helpers are there to make sure that everyone is following the rules and staying on the paths. We want everyone to have a fun and safe experience. To insure your desired experience please keep this in mind when scheduling your visit. The condition of our maze is greatly affected by weather conditions and its visitor’s behavior. Our maze as most will also start out green at the beginning of our season and will transform to brown by the end of our season. This will make for two different experiences.

Ever wonder where the toilet brush has been...

Lauren was frustrated. She had complained dozens of times to her daughter about her newest gag of kissing the bathroom mirror immediately after applying lipstick, but it was all to no avail. Finally, one day after spending a half hour scrubbing the mirror, only to find another kiss mark an hour later, Lauren had enough. “Lizzy!” she hollered, “What?” came her daughter’s reply through her bedroom door. I can’t find the toilet brush that I’ve been using to clean the bathroom mirror. Do you have any idea where it is?” After hearing the gagging from behind the bedroom door, Lauren knew her days of cleaning kiss marks off of mirrors were over.
