June 2015 Newsletter

Hurricane Season is here...

So from June 1st through November 30th we have to keep an eye on the Atlantic and on the Gulf so we will know what is brewing!  The storm predictions for the 2015 season say there will be less storms than usual, but as everyone who lives in Florida knows, the weather "experts" are not always spot on, the science of weather predicting relies on "Mother Nature" and she certainly has a mind of her own.

Everyone needs to be prepared and have a place to go in the event Aripeka West must be evacuated.  Aripeka is a Mandatory Evacuation Area and if Pasco County issues an Evacuation Order we all must head for higher ground.

If you will require Special Assistance to evacuate, you must plan for this in advance.  Pasco County provides a shelter program for those residents requiring special medically related care. Special needs shelters will be available for persons requiring more skilled medical care than available in a public shelter but not requiring an acute care facility such as a hospital. If this type of extended care is needed, contact Pasco County Emergency Management office at 727-847-8959 to be considered for registration into this program.

There is only one Pet Friendly Shelter.  It is the Fasano Regional Hurricane Shelter located 11611 Denton Avenue Hudson  Your pet(s) must be in a crate, and you will need to bring food, water, medications and proof of vaccinations.

Other shelters will be opened on an as needed basis. This is a PDF file and you will need Adobe to be able to open the link.

SunWest Park...

The Grand Opening at SunWest park has been delayed and it was not open for Memorial Day weekend as we had hoped it would be.  They are now shooting for the 4th of July.  This from their official Facebook Page.

Be sure to "Like" their page so you can keep up with the opening dates.

Scalloping...

Scallop Diving

Scallops are just one of the delicacies you will find in the waters along Florida's Nature Coast. The beautiful thing is how easy scallop diving can be, especially in the shallow waters of the Gulf Coast.
These tasty bivalves prefer clean water, which makes finding them that much easier. There are several ways to search for scallops, but snorkeling and diving are two of the most popular pastimes for residents and visitors to Florida's Nature Coast.
scallop divingThe most common method is to don a mask and snorkel and either wade out to a grassy flat from the beach, or boat to a shallow spot offshore. If you snorkel along the top of the water and look down in the grass, you will notice scallops by the blue eyes that seem to be peering from a tiny opening in the shell.
Then it's just a matter of diving down to grab the scallop from its perch in the grass bed. You get your scallops, your exercise and a suntan all at the same time!
Scallop diving is regulated by the State of Florida and is open from the Pasco-Hernando county line, north along the Gulf Coast to the Mexico Beach Canal in Bay County. Full scallop diving regulations can be found at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission website. The much anticipated season runs from June 27 – September 24 this year.
Florida's Nature Coast has many activities that result in delicious meals, but scallop diving may be the most fun for the whole family...naturally.

2015 Scallop Season runs from June 27th thru September 24th

 New transformers...

Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative has just completed replacing all of the transformers in Aripeka West.  They have been busy the last few months making upgrades to the electrical service in the Aripeka area.  Though you may have been little inconvenienced by power outages while they were making the changes to each transformer, the newer equipment should make your service better.
