The Sunset - September 2013

A Message from BJ...

As everyone knows by now, the United States Postal Service is planning to close the Aripeka Post Office on September 13, 2013.  We are fighting to keep the Aripeka Post Office, but unless something happens very soon, it is looking more and more unlikely that will happen.  In lieu of the facility remaining in our town we are willing to accept mail delivery to our homes or "cluster boxes" located in our community.  Even this will be an uphill battle as the USPS continues to move away from curbside delivery in all areas of the country.  The fight goes on...

On a happier note, I would like to thank everyone for the wonderful party for Gene & I.  We had a great time and really appreciate your thoughtfulness.  After eating some great food and cutting our beautiful cake, Henry played the sax and Gene & I danced the night away.  Wonderful memories for both of us.

So okay, enough with the rain...
Rain has been falling all summer long, lots of rain, so much rain that we have reached our normal yearly rainfall amount and there are still four months left in the year.  September is normally a rainy month in this area, so I guess we should be prepared for more of the wet stuff.  The almost daily rains have hampered our efforts to keep the lawns and fields mowed this summer, but you have to admit the grass is very green!  In addition to making the grass grow tall, the rain has found us a few roof problems in the park.  If you are experiencing a minor roof or window leak, by all means, take care of it now before it creates more damage.

Along with the rain...

The same rain makes the grass grow and the flowers bloom, also helps the keep the bug population growing.  Pasco County constantly battles the mosquitoes all summer long, but when the rains come like this, it makes their job all the more difficult.  They have been placing fish in the canals that encircle the park, these fish eat the mosquito larvae, they have been dropping pellets from the helicopter in the wooded areas that inhibit the larvae from hatching and they have been spraying our streets in the park to help control the adult population and even with all of their efforts, there are still plenty of mosquitoes out there waiting to bite you if you venture out into the wooded areas. Remember to used your mosquito repellant when you go into the wooded areas around the park especially around dusk or dawn.  Fire ants are popping up around the park, we are trying to kill these ants, but with each hill eradicated it seems that a new one appears, watch where you step and you can avoid them.

Scoop the poop...

During the month of August we received several complaints about "someone" not "scooping".  We have told those complaining of "poop" in their yards to watch and get a picture of the culprit.  Everyone has a cell phone with a camera theses days, so if you chose not to "scoop", please remember to "smile" as you will likely be on camera.  Seriously, everyone in the park should
know the rules, if you have a dog, please be a good pet parent and "scoop the poop"!  Your dog must  be walked on a leash with you holding the other end, loose dogs are not permitted.

Did You Know...

A person cannot taste food unless it is mixed with saliva. For example, if strong-tasting substance like salt is placed on a dry tongue, the taste buds will not be able to taste it. As soon as a drop of saliva is added and the salt is dissolved, however, a definite taste sensation results. This is true for all foods. Try it!

Our Events...

In October we will begin our Winter Events.  Event will be posted on our Monthly Calendar located at the end of each monthly Newsletter.  We will also post Events on the Message Board located at the entrance to the Mobile Home Park and on the Bulletin Board located under the Pavilion in the RV Park.

This year we are planning to have Pool Tournaments,  Card Nights, Bowling Nights and weekly Potlucks.  If there is an event that interests you and you think would be of interest to others, please let me know.  We are also considering having Daily Walks and Bicycle Riding a couple of days a week.

Other events we are now investigating include Canoe and Kayak Trips, Fishing on The Thunder, Gambling on the SunCruz and others to be announced.  Please let us know if you are interested in participating in any or all of these activities.

Projects...

This winter we would like to do a little project.  Many of you have seen the little Totem Pole Signs (or maybe the BIG ones) that consist of an upright pole with arrow signs giving the mileage to other cities and places of interest.  We would like to create one or two or three, however many it takes to display the home towns and places of interest of our residents and guests.  We will cut out the "arrow signs" and residents and guests can paint and decorate them and show off their "artistic" skills or at least their writing skills.

This will be fun and make a great decoration for Aripeka West.  So use your imagination to help us create some "art work"!

September Birthdays...

If you were born in September, we sure don't know about it!  We would like to wish you a Happy Birthday, but we don't always know when your Birthday is.

If you know someone at Aripeka West that has a Birthday in September, please let us know!

Fishing...

OFFSHORE
Offshore action has been hot! Grouper fishing has been excellent in a variety of depths ranging from 30-to 125-feet of water. Finding good bottom is the key and spending time on the water with eyes glued to a good sonar will help you locate those kinds of spots that will be your future honey holes.
Bluewater action has been somewhat disappointing for some anglers making long treks offshore. Billfishing action has been slower than normal for blue and white marlin, sailfish, and swordfish. The 42nd Annual Old Salt Loop Billfish Tournament ran last weekend with only one billfish being released by Ken Cummins aboard the vessel, Team HOOKER, winner of the event for the second time. They also weighed fish in each species of the “fun fish” division (tuna, dolphin, and wahoo, that were all weighed in). Scott Rickert aboard the Reel Screamer scored top honors with a bull dolphin weighing 38.36 pounds.
Mangrove snapper have been active, and after last week’s full moon, good action all around from Sarasota to Hernando Beach were reported. Most any rock pile will hold mangos, and generally the deeper the depth, the larger the fish, however, plenty of keeper mangrove snapper reside on hard bottom areas from Clearwater just off the beaches to up inside Tampa Bay. Small pilchards, shrimp, or cut squid will all work for mangos. Night fishing seems to be best for these fish, but they certainly will hit at midday.

INSHORE
Sunday, September 1 is a free fishing day with no license required. A couple of times a year anglers are given a pass with no license to worry about, and this falls on the day that snook will be reopening. But the fishing has been tough with the heat. Fishing inside on the flats will see water temperatures hitting the low 90’s at times when the rains slack. Rain has been tapering off this week and the water temps have been back on the rise again. Some anglers are avoiding the heat all together by doing some night dock light fishing for snook. As of Sunday, September 1, this fishery will be open again after an emergency closure 3 years ago due to a hard freeze that lingered for days, killing thousands of snook. For those who disagree with the opening, catch and release fishing for these fish remains their only option.
Trout fishing on the incoming tides has been good in some areas with good water flow. Fort Desoto and the Mullet Key area has some of the best trout fishing along with the south end of Tampa Bay off Pinellas Point.
On the south end of our region, Capt. Andy Cotton fishing out of CB Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key reported catching snook, trout, bluefish, jacks, and juvenile gag grouper while fishing Sarasota Bay and the surrounding waters with DOA Deadly Combos and CAL Jigs with Shad tails. His night fly trips around the docks have produced catches of snook.

FRESHWATER
The heat is on! Literally, if you are on the water after 9 a.m. and you want to catch fish, you’re pretty much relegated to flipping plastic worms in areas that are shaded by mats of hydrilla, lily pads, hyacinths or some other cover, or crank baits like the Rat-L-Trap in deeper water. Before that hour look to the early times for bass on surface lures in frog patterns around structure.

The Sunset August 2013

A Message from BJ...

As most of you already know, I married Gene Johnson on July 12, 2013.  I am very happy to be married to such a wonderful man.  I have waited a long time to find my perfect man and Gene is truly my "soulmate".  We were married at my son's home in Atlanta with my family present and enjoyed our first weeks together as man and wife on the beaches of Florida's east coast.  We arrived home on Sunday July 28th and I want to introduce Gene to all of my friends here at Aripeka West.

On Thursday August at 6PM we are having a Meet & Greet Celebration!  You can all meet Gene and enjoy a Pot Luck Dinner and entertainment.

Henry will has graciously offered to play his Saxophone and entertain us following dinner.  Henry is our guest in the RV Park and will be staying with us for a week or so.

Meet and Greet Celebration...

Thursday August 1st at 6PM we will have a Pot Luck Dinner to celebrate the marriage of Mr. & Mrs. Gene Johnson, (AKA Gene & BJ).  Please bring a dish, (a casserole or crock pot dish would be great) and let's wish BJ & Gene a very long and happy marriage!  Entertainment by Henry after dinner.

Summer Clean Up...

We are working to clean up Aripeka West.  You can do your part by stepping outside your home and taking an objective look.  Remember this is what others see when they pass by your home, does it make the impression that you want to project?  Is there some improvement needed?  Let's all work together to make Aripeka West look great.

Remember that only things designed to be outdoors may be placed in your yard or on your carport, patio or screen room.

Anything placed in your yard must be moved to facilitate mowing, this includes vehicles, lawn furniture, grills and other objects.

Please keep your MH's and RV's clean, if you need help with washing or cleaning the outside of your MH or RV, we can probably find someone to do this for you at a reasonable price.

If you have planted a garden, please make sure to keep it weeded and looking pretty.

All vehicles in the Park must be operable and all tires must be inflated.

Please welcome...

Brian La Flam is new to Aripeka West this year, he is in the RV Park in Lot #14.

Steve Woodside, he has returned to Aripeka West for the 3rd year in a row.  He is in the RV Park in Lot #28.

Robert Berry & Marcia Dodson are moving into the MH Park.  They are currently working to clean and repair their recently purchased MH located on Lot #61.

Oh So Hot...

Seems like it is just getting hotter and hotter this summer.  We have had a lot of rain too, over 20 inches in just July.  Your A/C is working hard to keep you cool, but at the same time causing your costs for electricity to rise substantially.  Here are a few ways to help you control your energy costs.

1. An air conditioner set at 70 degrees can cost twice as much to operate as one set at 78 degrees. Raise the thermostat by 2 degrees above its normal setting. You’ll still be comfortable, and your pocketbook will thank you.

2. Set the thermostat to 80 degrees when you’ll be out of the house for several hours and lower it when you return. But don’t shut the air conditioner off; it’s less efficient to cool the house back down than to leave it set at a higher temperature.

3. A ceiling fan uses about as much energy as a 100-watt bulb, but it can make a room feel up to eight degrees cooler. In summer, blades should turn counterclockwise, pushing air downward to create a cool breeze.

4.  Keeping windows closed and curtains drawn during the day can reduce cooling costs by 30%.

5. Lights, computers, and televisions all generate heat. Turn them off when they’re not in use.

6. Clean or replace the air filter monthly. Clogged, dirty filters block air flow and make a unit work much harder. A clean filter can save up to 10% on your bill.

Smoke Test...

We are planning a "Smoke Test" for our sewer system in the next few weeks.  Some of you will remember when we did this test last year, but for our "newbies", you may notice what looks like smoke coming from your toilet or your sewage connection, there is no cause for alarm, the smoke is not "real smoke" and there is no "fire" associated with this "smoke".  This "smoke" may also rise from spots in your yard where sewage pipes are located, again there is no cause for alarm.  You will receive a notice placed on your door explaining the Smoke Test and what date it will be performed several days prior to the test.

RV Park Water Upgrade...

While the water was turned off to Aripeka West on July 30th, we took the opportunity to install shut-off valves at each lot in the RV Park and to move water connections that were place close to electrical connections or too close to the ground.  This will make it easy to repair a broken water pipe in the RV Park without disrupting water service to all of Aripeka West.  This will keep water interruptions to a minimum in the future.

Thanks to everyone for their cooperation with the Water Shutdown by Pasco County, we know this was a hardship on our residents, but we sometimes have suffer a little to keep the infrastructure repaired and up to date.

Your Guests...

Please remember that you are responsible for your guests and their behavior.  While we welcome your guests, if you plan to have more than one non-registered vehicle on your lot at one time, please advise us in the office.  It is for your safety as well as the safety of other residents that we know when non-residents are in the park and whom they are visiting.  We have recently notices some problems with Guests of park residents that need to be addressed.

Speeding, your guests MUST obey the 10 MPH Speed Limit in the Park.

Parking, your guests must park on your lot, not vacant lots or lots belong to other residents.

Trespassing,  your guest must not go onto the property of other residents without the permission of the other resident.

Lately there have been lots of unusual comings and goings by people that neither live in the park or know whom they are here to visit when stopped and asked.  This park and the roads in this park are Private Property, your guests must enter the park through the front gate.  They are not to enter through the woods or through the back gate.  Anyone entering Aripeka West other than through the front gate will be suspect and may put themselves in the position of explaining their trespassing to the Sheriff's Department, so please advise your friends.

Fun Facts...

A typical American eats 28 pigs in his/her lifetime.  Can you say "Oink"?

Americans spend approximately $25 billion each year on beer.  Cheers!

An etiquette writer of the 1840's advised, "Ladies may wipe their lips on the tablecloth, but not blow their noses on it." Really????

Aunt Jemima pancake flour, invented in 1889, was the first ready-mix food to be sold commercially.   Still one of the best!

Capsaicin, which makes hot peppers "hot" to the human mouth, is best neutralized by casein, the main protein found in milk. Capsaicin also aids in calming joint pain, so make those peppers HOT!
Cast iron skillets used to be the leading source of iron in the American diet! Glad they now have vitamins for this, I can barely lift those pans anymore!
Chocolate contains phenyl ethylamine (PEA), a natural substance that is reputed to stimulate the same reaction in the body as falling in love.  Now I know why Chocolate is so good!
World wide, consumers spend more than $7 billion a year on chocolate. Annual per capita consumption of chocolate is 12 pounds per person.  Doesn't seem like near enough...
Each American eats an average of 51 pounds of chocolate per year.  Now that's more like it, are you eating your fair share?
Fried chicken is the most popular meal ordered in sit-down restaurants in the US. The next in popularity are: roast beef, spaghetti, turkey, baked ham, and fried shrimp.  The Colonel from KFC had something to do with this, ya' think?
Hostess Twinkies were invented in 1931 by James Dewar, manager of Continental Bakeries' Chicago factory. He envisioned the product as a way of using the company's thousands of shortcake pans which were otherwise employed only during the strawberry season. Originally called Little Shortcake Fingers, they were renamed Twinkie Fingers, and finally "Twinkies." And now after a very months missing from the store shelf they are back!  Did you miss them when they were gone?
In 1860, 'Godey's Lady's Book' advised US women to cook tomatoes for at least 3 hours.  Now why in the world was that?
In 1995, KFC sold 11 pieces of chicken for every man, woman and child in the US.   See, I knew he was behind that "chicken thing"?
In an authentic Chinese meal, the last course is soup because it allows the roast duck entree to "swim" toward digestion.  What if you don't have the Peking Duck, can you have your soup first?
In the United States, a pound of potato chips costs two hundred times more than a pound of potatoes.  This is why they tell us "this package is sold by weight, not by volume" to remind us just how expensive the chips really are, were you paying attention?

The Sunset July 2013

A Message from BJ...

Are we meeting on "the bridge" for the unofficial "Aripeka 4th of July Fireworks Display" again this year? Aripeka has a great celebration on "the bridge", there are no sponsors, just folks who love to put own their own personal fireworks display while the rest of the crowd watches!  This is Aripeka's own unique 4th of July celebration!

HAVE FUN AND STAY SAFE ON THE 4TH!
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

Also don't forget the Independence Day Celebration here at Aripeka West on July 5th at 6 PM.  We may not have a big fireworks display, but there will be lots of food and fun!

Independence Day Celebration...

This year will mark the 237th Anniversary of our nations independence and to celebrate, Aripeka West will host a cook out in the RV Park on July 5th at 6 PM.  Anyone want to play Pool, The Bimini Ring Game, Ping Pong, Corn Hole or Darts?  We have lots of games so let us know.  Please bring a side dish to share.  Hope to see everyone there.  We will have a drawing for patriotic items after dinner, so make sure to drop you name in raffle bucket.

Rainy Season is here...

Looks like we are back to the every afternoon rain program and it is absolutely normal for Aripeka this time of year!  The rain is wonderful for the grass, shrubs and flowers and in many cases we get a little reprieve from the 90° temps which is rather nice.  While the rain is great for nature and everything is growing at a rapid rate, the rain does slow the mowing process, so please be patient and know that we will be to your area soon.  Pleas keep your yard cleared so that we will be able to mow your yard when we are your area.  It is especially important to remove dog leashes, hoses and any other items that may be hidden from view when we mow.

Weather Underground...

Weather Underground is a great source of instant weather information on the web.  The site has all the current weather conditions for Aripeka.  Ever wondered what the current weather is in your hometown?  It is easy to check it on Weather Underground, just enter the Zipcode or the name of the city and state in the search block and instantly you will have the information.  You can  get updates on warnings and advisories, including hurricanes, tropical storms and even thunderstorms as they approach Aripeka.  Hurricane and Tropical Storm Tracking is available.  They also post some interesting news stories about the weather and the people it affects.

AripekaWest.com...

We continue to work on our new website, it is a work in progress and we will continue to add new pictures and info each month.  You can read "The Sunset" on our site each month too.  We have had several requests for rental MH's and RV sites since we created the website.  This is exciting because it means our website is really doing its job.  If you have pictures that you think really represent Aripeka and especially Aripeka West, please email them to AripekaWest@gmail.com for consideration.  Submitted pictures must have been taken by you to be considered.

Turkey Sightings...

While it may be a bit more exciting to see a bear here at Aripeka West, that does not happen often, but "Turkey Sightings" are almost daily.  Three turkey mom's have around 10 young ones that they parade throughout park.  There have been "sightings" in the RV park, the MH park and in the surrounding fields!

More Fun in the Sun...

Enjoy fishing from the bridges in Aripeka, visiting Pasco County Parks and Beaches, visiting Hernando County Parks and Beaches, seeing the Mermaids, renting Canoes and Kayaks, visiting the Wildlife Survival Sanctuary in Hernando County and just relaxing at the park.

Has anyone visited any of these places?  If you have, please post on our Facebook Page, tell us how you liked it and post a picture if you took one!  It is always fun to hear from our friends about local events, parks and other entertainment and recreational venues located nearby.

 Fishing Fun Facts…

How many varieties of Snook are found in Florida waters?
    4. One of the most popular game fish in Florida, Snook are also a delicacy that is not available in restaurants. It is illegal to sell them for commercial use. The 4 varieties are common, fat, tarpon, and swordspine.
In addition to being an excellent game fish, Bonefish are also quite tasty.
    f. Bonefish are one of the strongest fish for their relative size. Fishing for them is a huge industry in Florida.
Sailfish, dolphin, wahoo, tripletail, kingfish, and marlin all fall under the 'pelagic' category.

    t. The 'pelagics' or fish that live in the water column include some of the most sought after gamefish species in the world.
What fish is known for it's incredible leaping ability when hooked?

Tarpon. Tarpon make amazing leaps when they are hooked. That coupled with their very bony/hard mouths make them especially difficult to land. While they have no food value, in Florida you can keep one if you pre-purchase a permit in advance, for trophy purposes ony.
Which city is known as the "Sailfish capital of the world"?

Stuart. Stuart is located about 45 minutes north of West Palm Beach. During the winter months, hundreds of sailfish are caught and released during annual tournaments that attract anglers from all over the world.
Which of the following, Mackerel, Stripers, Ladyfish or Flounder is not commonly found in Florida waters?

Stripers. Flounder upwards of 10lbs are common along the eastern coast of Florida. Mackerel make an annual migration through along the east coast too. Ladyfish are a winter sportfish that have no food value, but are quite entertaining to catch. Like Tarpon, they are known to leap of the water repeatedly when hooked.
When fishing offshore for dolphin, which of the following Weed lines, Floating objects, Baitfish pods, should you look for?
All of these (Weed lines, Floating objects, Baitfish pods). Floating objects like planks of wood can be amazing attracters of dolphin. Weed lines can run for miles and hold small baitfish that dolphin seek.
While mullet are one of the more popular baits used in Florida for a variety of sportfish, they are not edible for humans.  True or False?
    f. There are a few species of mullet that are considered quite tasty if prepared properly.
Which of the following around docks, near spoils or submerged islands, along the grassy shallows at causeways, would be a good place to find snook, trout, and other inshore sportfish?
All of these (Around docks, Near spoil (or submerged) islands, Along the grassy shallows at causeways). Sportfishing in any of these areas can produce great fishing fun.
What is minimum distance from shore needed to successfully catch sailfish?
There is none. They have been caught from fishing piers before. Along the east coast of Florida, there have been several documented accounts of sailfish caught from fishing piers with a water depth of under 30 feet.

Rules to remember...

• The Speed Limit is 10 MPH.

• No fires are to be built on the ground.

• No "Butts" are to be thrown on the ground.

• No "inside" furniture is to be placed outside.

Sparklebration Celebration...

Sparklebration 2013 starts at Noon on July 4th with contests, games and entertainment throughout the day culminating in a Fireworks Display at 9:15PM.  If you attend this event, please tell us about the experience on our Facebook Page and if you take pictures, we would love for you to post them too!

Happy 4th of July
